Game Spolight: Selchow & Righter Co.

In 1880 E.G. Selchow and John Righter founded a partnership as Selchow & Righter Co, SelRight for short. The company produced and licensed games designed by other people, their first hit being Parcheesi which they trademarked in 1874.

In 1952 they got another hit when they licensed Scrabble from Jame Brunot. They purchased the trademark for this game in 1972. Other notable games include Anagrams in 1934 and Trivial Pursuit in 1982.

Coleco Industries purchased Selchow & Righter in 1986 for a cool $75 million, but then declared bankruptcy in 1989. Coleco Sold SelRight to Hasbro for $85 million in cash plus some stock considerations. The Selchow & Righter trademark, at least the Righter portion, remained with the Righter family.

Other games produced by SelRight include Cargoes (1934/1958), Cabby (1938), Jotto (1955), Karate (1964), & Whodunit (1972).
