Monopoly

Original 1935 Monolpoly Game

Elizabeth Magie first created The Landlord’s Game in 1903 (patented in 1904) to illustrate the negative aspects of private land monopolies.  By 1933 a variation of the game called Monopoly was the basis of the board game we know today, first sold by Parker Brothers on February 6, 1935.

Game design is often credited to Charles Darrow despite Elizabeth Magie having the earliest patent.

It’s had eighteen different player tokens over the years, from a battleship to a T-rex.  Now owned by Hasbro, an estimated 250 million+ games have been sold worldwide, and it has been played by an estimated half a billion people.

The most expensive version on Monopoly is valued at an estimated $2 Million Dollars.
